Guinea’s Coup Figurehead Assumes Rank of Army General

In a bold move that underscores his grip on Guinea’s military and political landscape, Guinea’s coup leader Mamadi Doumbouya has elevated himself to the rank of Army General—a decision unveiled as the nation commemorated the founding of its armed forces.

Doumbouya, 43, who seized power in a dramatic takeover in September 2021 by deposing former President Alpha Conde, has risen from elite commander to one of the region’s most formidable figures. On Friday evening, the junta leader issued a decree announcing not only his self-promotion but also his receipt of the prestigious Grand Cross of the National Order of the Colatier—the nation’s highest honor. This accolade, reserved for extraordinary contributions to Guinea’s unity and diplomacy, has fueled calls from his ardent supporters for him to seek the presidency whenever the junta ultimately hands over control.

Doumbouya’s rise mirrors the wave of military-led takeovers sweeping West Africa, joining ranks with power-holders in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. His rule has been marked by an intense crackdown on opposition voices, with many political leaders facing arrests, judicial scrutiny, or forced exile—a display of his determination to maintain control amid growing challenges in the region.
