ChatGPT Boom in Africa: South Africa and Morocco Outpace the Rest, India Takes Global Lead

South Africa and Morocco rank among the top global users of ChatGPT, highlighting Africa’s growing engagement with AI technology.

Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT nearly two years ago, it has played a major role in driving the generative AI revolution. According to the 2023 Global Consumer Sentiment Survey from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), consumer awareness of AI is higher than anticipated.

In Morocco and South Africa, 80% of consumers are aware of ChatGPT. Among these, 38% in Morocco and 31% in South Africa actively use the tool.

Earlier, an IMF report placed both countries in Africa’s top 10 for AI readiness. South Africa ranked 3rd on the continent with a preparedness score of 0.49, while Morocco scored 0.42, positioning it 7th globally.

Worldwide, 75% of BCG survey participants have used ChatGPT or another AI service, with even higher engagement in countries like India, Brazil, and the UAE, where AI adoption is accelerating beyond levels in more established markets.

India leads with 45% of respondents using ChatGPT, partly due to its high concentration of IT roles where ChatGPT offers practical support.

Many consumers see AI’s potential to enhance daily life, with 39% reporting positive views on its impact.

There’s also significant enthusiasm for AI in the workplace: 60% believe it will benefit education and learning, while 55% expect efficiency gains.

However, respondents noted concerns about AI, with 33% worried about data security and ethics and 30% concerned about job displacement. Similar mixed feelings emerged around AI’s workplace role.
