Tinubu Defies NEC Recommendations, Reaffirms Commitment to Legislative Process for Reform Bill

President Bola Tinubu has firmly stated that the Proposed Tax Reforms Bill, which is currently under consideration in the National Assembly, will progress through the established legislative processes.

This assertion was made on Friday through a statement from his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.

It’s important to note that the National Economic Council (NEC) had previously recommended that the executive withdraw the bill, following significant opposition from certain stakeholders in the north. They argued that the proposed reforms would adversely affect their region and should be retracted.

In response, Onanuga encouraged anyone with concerns about the bill to share their insights during the upcoming public hearings.

“President Tinubu acknowledges the valuable advice from the members of the National Economic Council, particularly Vice President Kashim Shettima and the 36 State Governors. He believes that the ongoing legislative process presents a crucial opportunity for incorporating feedback and making necessary amendments, without the need to withdraw the bill entirely from the National Assembly.

While urging the NEC to let the legislative process unfold, President Tinubu is open to further discussions and engagement with key stakeholders to address any concerns.
