WhatsApp Rolls Out Contact Storage Inside the App, Drops Hints About Usernames
WhatsApp is launching a major update aimed at enhancing the user experience, particularly through improved contact management features. This update seeks to simplify how users add, manage, and engage with their contacts across different devices.
Previously, adding contacts on WhatsApp was limited to mobile devices, requiring users to either manually enter phone numbers or scan QR codes. With this new update, users will be able to add and manage contacts directly from WhatsApp Web and the Windows app, taking advantage of keyboard functionality. This capability will later be expanded to other linked devices, ensuring a cohesive experience throughout the platform.
Additionally, WhatsApp is introducing a feature that allows users to save contacts solely within the app. This is particularly beneficial for individuals who share their phones or manage multiple WhatsApp accounts. By saving contacts directly to WhatsApp, users can create distinct lists for personal and business contacts, enhancing organization and privacy. This update also addresses concerns about losing contacts when switching devices or if a phone is lost; contacts saved exclusively to WhatsApp will be securely stored and easily restored.
These changes pave the way for the introduction of usernames on WhatsApp, a feature aimed at improving user privacy. Usernames will serve as an alternative to sharing phone numbers, allowing users to connect without revealing personal information. While this feature is still in development and not yet available, WhatsApp has confirmed that it is in the works and will be released in the future.
In my view, the ability to manage contacts from any device is a welcome enhancement, particularly for those who primarily use WhatsApp on their computers. The option to save contacts exclusively within the app adds valuable privacy and flexibility. I’m especially looking forward to the upcoming usernames feature, as it will further enhance privacy and streamline connections on the platform. Overall, these updates reflect WhatsApp’s dedication to improving user experience and privacy, and I’m excited to see how these features develop.
